The cave church of St. Archangel Mikhail in Radozhda

In August at Radozda - Restoration and conservation of Archangel Michael Church

(Vecer, 28.07.2003) - A team of the Republic Institute for Protection of Monuments of Culture will start drafting an elaborate study for conservation and restoration of the architecture and fresco painting at a cave church, Archangel Michael, in the village of Radozda, Struga area. The team consists of painters-conservators, architects and documentarists, and the funds for the project have been granted by World Foundation. Archangel Michael Church is an important 13th century monument of culture with a long history of existence visible in a few preserved layers of the fresco painting from the erection of the church to the 19th century. Located high in the cliffs above Lake Ohrid, it is one of the rare monuments from the Byzantine period, which has not been subject to systemic exploration and restoration so far. So, exploration of architecture and fresco painting of larger scope will be first made this year to define the original image of the church, chronology of all its phases, types and causes of damages and methods for their removal. The activities will encompass conservation of the fresco painting including cleaning up some of its parts and defining the layers in the multilayer fresco painting, one of the most complex processes in conservation.
