Traditional Architecture |
The tradition of building in Struga originates from the surrounding areas. The oldest preserved work of architecture dates back to the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Although Struga is located on the shores of the Ohrid Lake, urbanisticaly Struga is faced towards the river Crni Drim. The main characteristics of a house in Struga are: high stone ground floors, massive gates and wide balconies with roofs (so called “cardaci”). The urban Struga aims at preserving the traditional look of the old Struga houses by incorporating this style into the newly built objects, as for example the hotels “Belgrade” and “Biser”.
